Glitter Ain't Always Gold: How to End Comparisons and Expand Your Own Lane

Updated: Jan 8, 2019

I constantly feel like I am comparing myself to other influencers and bloggers. I question how someone with the same amount of followers as me gets way more collaborations or engagement than I do and the list goes on.

24 year old Fashion Blogger, Debbi (@debthecuban) shares her experience in the blogging world and tips on focusing on her own lane.

1. List a few of your most valued accomplishments so far within your business or craft ( ‘so far’ because there will be plenty more wins to come for you. Period.)

“I have a fashion blog named Vida de Moda! I had the opportunity to be invited by Teen Vogue for the UGG store grand opening in Chicago.”

“I was also invited by DryBar to attend their grand opening in Indianapolis as an influencer in exchange for blog and instagram posts. I got a complimentary blowout for attending. I was so thrilled for this because DryBar is such a huge company, and I'm glad I got to represent curly-haired girls.”

“I also did a collaboration with Smile Brilliant, an at home teeth whitening company and Neutrogena's PR sent me over some lip products as well. I feel extremely grateful to have been able to partner with some iconic brands/companies!” 2. What is you're biggest BLEM/SH or obstacle that you had to face internally or externally that made you want to give up? (remember to try to be as honest as you can) How did you turn your pain into purpose? Your BLEM/SHES into blessings?

“Oh my gosh, there are so many! I constantly feel like I am comparing myself to other influencers and bloggers, I question how someone with the same amount of followers as me gets way more collaborations or engagement than I do and the list goes on. What I have been doing lately is not paying attention or unfollowing accounts that make me feel that way. It's okay to use them for inspiration, but not when you feel like you are useless and don't matter. I've been doing my own thing and pitching to brands, instead of just waiting for it to come to me, I have been going for it instead.”

3. A word of advice for anyone trying to follow their dreams in your particular industry?

“I would just say, GO FOR IT! I always hear of so many people saying, "I'm about to start a blog," or "I want to start a Youtube channel." But they never do it or are too scared to put it out there or don't know how to start. There are so many resources online to help you learn how to get started for free. I would recommend listening to "The Influencer Podcast", it's extremely motivating and Julie Solomon provides so much good information. Just find your niche and get it started!”
